Bald Head and Men

Bald head and Men

Bald Head cartoon image courtsey: comm-one.org

The fault in not in our stars but in ourselves!

Hairs go thin first and combs tell the story of what to happen before long, it can start even from twenties for those who are prone. Some people never go grey at all; “let them go to the grave with all their bushy stuff!” “It was all because of the helmet I wore during rides” or “the hair cream I used” “the nasty dandruff is the culprit” These are often repeated complaints, which are just excuses, the real culprit is the maleness within and only treatment is castration! Are there any takers for this cure!

Caesar the bald.

It is history that the Roman Senate granted permission to Julius Caesar to wear his laurel wreath in the house and whenever and wherever he liked. Caesar was more than happy as his baldness –which he abhorred- could be covered from spectators! Caesar as the ruler could get anything but he could not get some extra hairs on his head, what a pity for an emperor! Even though an utterly useless stuff on top; the hair on head is a prized possession both by hairies and baldies.

Bringing down buildings with long hair!

World over consumer goods companies make billions of dollars by selling hair creams that let hairs grow thicker and those shampoos that eliminates dandruff for ever (ever means one week). TV channels would have gone bankrupt far before if there were no craze for healthy hairs and those ads for promoting ‘hair-nourishers’. A recent ad pictured a girl tying her long and sturdy hair on the pillar of a huge building (similar to Indian Parliament House) and pulling it down (computer has made everything possible!)

It is all in the genes.

The highly valued hair is just a sprouting bulb of fibrous protein that waves 100,000 on the average head. Some of them keep on growing and some of them fall dead! The average loss of hair per-day is about one hundred. The baldies also lose some what the same number but their replacement level is poor. Wearing of tight hat and dandruff always blamed as the reasons are just blames, it is all written in the genetic code. One is born with a genetic pattern dictating when to go grey and when to go bald, there is no way to escape!

Ladies are a lucky lot.

Vitamin, Protein, and mineral deficiencies are not the main reasons proper food may delay balding to some extend but can’t eliminate it (for ladies these are found useful). Age, hormones and genes all combine to form a cock-tail that causes the Male-pattern balding - The typical case with many great men from Caesar to Krushchev. There is another type of baldness –the female pattern. This is not a normal case, as it is caused by infections, malnourishment, distress etc, which can be treated.

Don’t blame the baldman.

The process of going bald starts at the early age of twenty, when the genes received from the forefathers (call them baldness genes) begin their mischief, they instruct the hair follicles to produce excessive amounts of 5- Alpha reductase, the 5-Alpha in turn combines with testosterone and a compound ‘dihydrotestosterone’( the real bad-guy in the story). This compound makes the hair follicles (the glands from which hairs grow) shrink and their produce get thinner along with. Some of the follicles become non- functional altogether. And the ‘poor man becomes a bald’ for no fault of his.

The only way out, a rather painful one!

The role played by male-hormones have been known from very old time, Aristotle had noted the male factor’s responsibility in balding, the phenomenon that eunuchs (men whose sex organs are removed) not becoming bald was their catch-point. Even in this age of advanced technologies castration remains the only method to ward of baldness!

The best of both worlds!

Those who wished to have their hair as well as their vital organs used many ways to keep baldness at bay, like shampooing the hair with tar! (Tar being hairy black thought it has something to do with hair), applying goose-dung or petroleum on hair etc, some of them tried innovative methods like covering head with rubber and suck out inside to provoke hair to get out of skin!

Minoxidil.

There came one medicine minoxidil (originally a hyper tension drug) just apply it on the portion where hair growth was required there were many reports of success, but there was a hitch it was not a one time remedy and had to be repeated. The author does not what happened to minoxidil at present it is not in use, perhaps some health hazards would have occurred to the users.

Transplanters.

Now it is the time of the hair Trans planters, they pluck healthy hairs from no so important locations of the same person and plant it in more visible parts! People are more than ready to part with their hard earned money for some hairs transferred from one to the other, and the cosmetic surgeons make men look ‘younger and smarter’, but as far as there is the ‘dihydroteststerone’ is there in the body the newly planted follicles are at threat the bad-guy wont give some peace of mind to the follicles and he will go on attacking it with go thin orders.

The big bully.

The dihydrotestosterone does not know that a tidy sum has been spent for the transfer of the newly rehabilitated hairs and the concern the owner of the hair has for its durability. Badguys are always bad-guys whether is di hydro – testo-sterones or mono hydro testosterones! They find a pleasure in making good people bald. As long as men do not recognize bald is beautiful the cat and mouse game will go on and shampoo sellers and hair sellers will make money.

An old saying.

The following is a true story of a husband who became bald due to the rivalry between his two wives. One of them younger and the other was older and grey haired. The husband used to spend alternate days with each wives. The younger wife one day plucked some of the grey ones from his pepper and salt hairs to make him look younger. Next day the elder wife saw him younger and she plucked more black ones to make him look older so that he matches her. This rivalry continued and ultimately the poor man became bald!

There is an old saying in Malayalam which means “there is no cure for jealousy and baldness” This husband from Korea became bald due to the jealousy of his wives!

The transportation of these heavy parts safely was a task which deserved equal merit as the construction, but all done successfully by building rail to the top of the mountain and carrying the parts using cog-wheels. The statue was opened on 1931.

Seven is not eight!

There is a contradiction in selecting seven wonders other than Pyramids as the total number comes to eight. It would have been appropriate if six would have selected other than Pyramid of Giza as it is the only existing wonders of the original seven. Seven should have been kept as seven itself in 7 – 7 - 2007, Deferring to stretching to 8 – 8 – 2008!

Loss of wisdom!

The high profile canvassing via SMS also have made a balanced decision impossible, and number of structures lost the covetable status in the battle-cry. Kerala articles presented a list of 7 of which Taj Mahal alone emerged winner. The other six were Angkor Wat, Hagia Sofia, Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Neuschwanstein Castle and The Kremlin. All these were eligible but lost due to lack of back-support. It is said wisdom gets lost in the flood of knowledge and knowledge in turn gets lost in the flood of information. However the project could make some awareness in youth about the cultural heritage of the world so far so good.

Why vote for the Taj?

Age. As per the first parameter Age (older the structure gains an ancestral status and a new structure of the same shape stands no match to the old), Taj sufficiently aged (built in 1632 – 1648) as a structure of the early seventeenth century structure.

History. Taj was built as a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal wife of Emperor Shah Jehan belonging to the Mughal Empire king Shah Jehan hence Taj has the status of the monument dedicated to eternal love. To add to the woes of the king he got imprisoned by his own son Aurangazeb and had to spend the rest of his life in the nearby prison. There was one favor done to the king he could see Taj from his place of arrest.

Preservation. Taj was lucky enough to be preserved in good shape where as almost many of the other structures were got destroyed more than one times and had to be rebuilt thereby losing its originality.

Magnificence. The Taj was built by the strenuous work of 20,000 skilled workers brought from all parts of the world and they all had to take 16 long years to complete the work. The precision of the works involved was that much and it all reflected in each square inch of the structure. During nights the sight of Taj standing bathed in the moonlight is something never could be seen anywhere else in the world. Yes we vote for the Taj!

Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty image courtsey: wikipedia.org

Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World (La liberte eclairant le monde)

It is a common phenomenon that a monument acts as the face of a nation, Eiffel Tower to France or London Tower the United Kingdom. ‘Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World’ (popularly called the Statue of Liberty) is precisely doing the same role as it has become the face of America for the last 121 years. This statue stands tall as the universal symbol of freedom and liberty, welcoming those who had to flee their native place and had to seek asylum some where else to escape repression and injustice at their own home state.

Just a ticket.

This colossal statue is situated in the Liberty Island (14.71 acre islet in the New York port (this uninhabited islet was formerly known as Bedloe’s Island) in the mouth of River Hudson accessible only by ferry service. Those who take a ticket to the ferry can roam in the island to pass time without any other fee. But to get in to the monument the monument requires separate ticket and a tight security check up.

Rich and poor divide.

Though it was a gift there was some agreements between the two people, it was the responsibility of the American people to build the pedestal for the statue, the French were to construct the statue, transport it to New York and erect (assemble) it. Fund raising for the mega work was not progressing as desired. The benefit shows, public performances by celebrities and all gimmicks were tried in both America and France but failed to arouse the desired effect. The rich considered it as a national project and remarked let nation raise the money after all they collect the taxes, the middle class as usual thought let the rich contribute as they have enough money.

Funds just flow.

When the lack of funds paused as a stumbling block it was the role of the intelligentsia to act, upset by the tardy progress of the fund raising the Pulitzer (the media baron, who found the Pulitzer’s prize) took up the matter and he wrote harshly about the Peoples’ neglect of a grand work like this through the media he owned and this had a sudden impact and funds began to flow!

For its making the French people engaged the best team they had; because it was such a prestigious work.

The construction of this statue.

Frederique Augusta Bartholdi image courtsey: wikipedia.org

As this statue represented the prestige of the whole French people it was for them a work of national importance. Only the best could be engaged for its work and so they did. The name of Frederique Augusta Bartholdi the best name in this field was selected as the chief architect, the massive structure with facilities for a lot of visitors inside required a matching structure, the didn’t have to think twice in bringing in none other than Alexander Gustav the maker of Eiffel Tower. Outer skin of the statue was made of copper plates Eugene Violet le Duc was the man for converting plain copper plates in to immortality.

An affair between two people.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in October 28, 1886 in connection with the centennial celebrations of the United States of America; it was designated as a national monument in July 4, 1986. This colossal statue of a woman wearing robe and holding a stone tablet close to her chest in the left arm and a lightened torch in her raised right arm was a gift the people of France gave to their counterparts living in America when they were celebrating their centennial of freedom. The crown the statue wears has seven spikes each representing seven oceans as well as seven continents.

Vital Stats.

  • The height from floor to the edge of the torch -----305 feet and 1 inch.
  • Top of base to torch------------------------------------151 feet and 1 inch
  • Height of the head -------------------------------------- 16’ 5’’
  • Width of the eye -----------------------------------------2’6’’
  • Height from ground to pedestal -----------------------154’
  • Length of right arm ------------------------------------- 42’’
  • Quantity of copper used --------------------------------31 Tons.
  • Steel used ------------------------------------------------ 125 Tons.
  • Wind sway ----------------------------------------------- 3’’ (at wind speed 50 mph)

Welcome to the fair freedom’s open door!

Statue of Liberty image courtsey: artseaphotos.com

The present torch the statue bears has golden flame, during day time it shines in the sun; and during night the glitter comes reflected from the flood lights. The statue faces to the New York harbor and to the travelers who land in America this tall statue offers a welcome sight (travelers include immigrants from various parts of the world running away from oppression as well as Americans who return to their land after foreign journeys. This statue seems as it is floating in the blue sky as stand still in the passing whit clouds in the deep-blue sky.

July 4, 1776.

The crown worn by the statue has twenty five windows representing symbolizing all the precious gem-stones on earth. The stone tablet carried in its left arm has a date inscribed on it ‘July 4, 1776’ (July,iv MDCCLXXVI); the date when America got its independence. This is not just a statue it is the symbol of bondage between the people of two independent nations.

A monument so unique.

Statue of liberty image courtsey: wikipedi.org

Its greatness is that Statue of Liberty was not just made by a crazy or autocratic ruler or a government that wished to show its strength and power flaunting money, but by common people of two nations by contributing money from their daily earnings, so that their money gets immortalized in the shape of a towering monument which symbolizes mutual love, understanding, liberty and freedom. No where else in the world there is such a monument that tells the story of love between the people of two independent nations like the Statue of Liberty!

Neuschwanstein Palace

Neuschwanstein Palace

New Swan Stone-Palace.

This palace is the most cherished structure of Germany built in September 5, 1869; 3306 feet above sea-level on the Alps mountain ranges. It is built in an inaccessible place on the mountain ranges not by accident but purposefully by king Ludwig 2 (popularly known as Mad King Ludwig for his crazy ideas). King Ludwig 2 (1845 -1886) wanted it in such a secluded and isolated area. The name Neuschwanstein in German means ‘new swan stone palace’.

Hohen Schwangau.

Neuschwanstein Palace was constructed near Fussen in Bavaria (a border state with Austria). The king originally named it as ‘Hohen Schwangau’ meaning ‘high swan country’ (swan was the emblem of the knight-hood to which he belonged). Hohen Schwangau a nearby village where he spent his childhood in a palace bearing the same name built by his father King Maxmilian 2 of Bavaria). Until the death of Ludwig- 2; the name of this palace remained Hohen Schwangau.

A tribute to Wagner.

King Ludwig 2 (who was crowned at the age of 19) a fan of Richard Wagner built this hill palace as a tribute to his favorite artist Richard Wagner (1813 -1883, the world famous German composer known for his operas but Ludwig had not actually seen his performance). Seven weeks after the death of Ludwig 2 the palace was left open to the public. Since then it has been there as a crowd puller. At present more than six thousand people flock to this palace everyday. It remains as the most photographed structure in Germany (though photography is banned in the inside).

Theater-set artist to design a palace!

This palace was also intended as a retreat to the king’s family in the wilderness of the Alps Mountain near by Alpine Lake. King Ludwig was uncustomary in his ideas and it was not an architect that was selected for the design of the palace but a theater set designer Mr. Christian Jank. Necessary architectural expertise was rendered by Eduard Reidel and later by Georg Dollman.

King Ludwig-2.

The story of Ludwig-2 was a tragedy in real life (his detractors called him ‘mad King Ludwig’ while those who loved him affectionately called him ‘fairy-tale king’). Ludwig from early life lived in a world of fantasy. His reign lasted just 22 years but in this short period he was engaged in a ‘palace building spree’ and he built several; of which Neuschwanstein is the most beautiful and unique.

A plot?

Just before the completion of the palace the king was declared insane by a state commission and was arrested at the palace, and was taken to Schloss berg later the king was found dead in Lake Stamberg, (along with the dead-body of the psychiatrist who certified him insane) under mysterious circumstances.

A big hit.

Whatever would have happened to the king his ‘dream child palace’ clicked; as no architect could have given birth to such an unusual structure; which has an unsusceptible touch of fantasy all over (it is because of its extraordinariness the replica of this palace has got a place in the ‘Disney’s World’s many sites as ‘sleeping beauty palace’. The model of this palace has been used in the Disney film ‘sleeping beauty’

The Palace complex and its rooms

conservatory

A tour in the palace is an unforgettable experience, as images of numerous images appear as either as paintings on the wall as sculptures before the visitors. Swans (the symbol of Hohen Schwangau knights), saints, heroes. The first is the servants’ rooms in the first upper floor, from their spiral staircase leads on north to the lower hall then to the Throne-room, King’s apartment, dining room, bed-room, oratory, salon, dressing room, the grotto and to the conservatory. Then proceed via spiral staircase to the 4th floor the singer’s hall and it all ends with the kitchen

lower hall

The servants’ rooms; altogether there are five of them the total number of servants ranged from 10 to 15. It is the first place from where the visit of the palace begins. These rooms are well maintained and furnished with good quality oak furniture.

The upper hall. There is the spiral-stair-case leading to it (formerly the king alone could use it), there is a white marble dragon on guard duty!

The Throne-room. This room in essence resembles the Byzantine Church; Ludwig had given instructions to build it similar to the All Saints’ Church Munich as well as The Hagia Sophia Constantinople.

The main stair-case leads to the 3rd floor east the King’s apartment. Images of the Sigurd Legends are depicted on the walls (Sigurd a legendary hero acquires a treasure defeating one dragon, but along with the treasured a fatal curse reaches him which finally gets him murdered).

Dining room.

Dining room is a surprise one expecting a big hall will be upset, Ludwig preferred to dine alone made it too tiny but rich in art. A manually operated lift brought dish from the kitchen. The bronze idol of Sigurd fighting with the dragon is really wonderful piece of art.

Bed room.

Viewer expects a bed-room of a king must be the most expensive one of the whole rooms; it is true in Neuschwanstein palace. The oak carvings are so exquisite whole settings give the atmosphere of a church. The bed is elaborate and Gothic in style.

Oratory (Chapel)

is so located that it is accessible from bed and dressing rooms, a very private space for the king. Images of King Louis-2 decorate the walls of the oratory (King Louis was the Patron Saint of Ludwig.

Dressing room.

Exquisite paintings adorns the wall and the ceiling is painted as if to look like and open sky with birds and scenes which can create feelings of illusions.

Grotto.

The Grotto is designed to look as it is a natural drip-stone cave, with the color lights and psychedelic designs it generates a mystical feeling. The king has set a hole direct to the singers’ hall to hear the music while he was sitting here.

Singer’s Hall.

It was inspired by the Minstrel’s Hall of Warburg (designed by Julius Hofman). Once King Ludwig visited Minstrel’s Hall to attend a singers’ contest; impressed by its design he determined to build one similar to that hall. This is the largest hall in the palace and occupies the entire 4th floor.

Kitchen.

Kitchen had all the modern trappings even though the entire palace was built in a medieval style. It has hot and cold running water, automatic spit, cup-boards that can be heated by hot air from the stove etc. Kitchen is one of the best preserved rooms.

An explosive concoction.

There are many wonderful constructions in the world built by great kings engaging famous architects, being ‘normal’ they always failed to build something like Neuschwanstein. This palace’s uniqueness is that it is a work of art in the name of a palace. Neuschwanstein in its present form would never have been made if Ludwig was normal and his architect was conventional. Its location (on the tip of Pollat george of the Alps) style of construction, so unearthly that a concoction of a crazy king and a theater set designer alone could make!
