Chris Benoit Found Dead

Chris Benoit's death a murder or suicide?

Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and his 7 year old son Daniel have been found dead in their Fayetville, Ga. Home. Police has not given out any details regarding the family’s death. Already investigating authorities have stated that they are treating this as a homicide-suicide case. They have also stated that nothing can be confirmed until evidence was examined by a crime lab. A local TV station is reporting that the investigators believe that Benoit murdered his wife and kids before taking his own lives.

Wrestling fans all over the world must be shocked by the news of the Chris Benoit being found dead. This brings a surge of questions to ones mind like how did chris benoit die, is chris benoits death murder or is it suicide, who killed chris benoit ?, The relationship between Vince McMahon & Chris Benoit, Why did Chris Benoit cummit Suicide ? etc.

Us Title won by Chris Benoit image courtsey: itis.mn.it

Date Won: 5/8/06, 5/15/06, Defeated: fatal four way/ edge in a hardcore, Title Defenses: 2

He has always been admired as one of the greatest workers in pro-wrestling. His best of 7 matches against Booker T during his WCW days raised the bar as far technique goes. He was one of those wrestlers who appealed to the purists and his career was a success wherever he went.

It is also reported that Chris Benoit missed the pay-per-view ‘Vengeance’show of the WWE last weekend. It is reported that he was supposed to win the ECW title. During the show it was reported that he couldn’t attend because of ‘Personal Reasons’. His reasons must have been pretty serious for him to have missed such an important event. The signs should have been clear then itself that something was wrong as Benoit would never have a missed a match unless the circumstances were dire.

Today another man who has been ‘presumed’ dead announced the death of Chris Benoit and his family. After cancelling Raw, Vince McMahon announced to the world the tragic news, bringing to an end the minority belief that he may be dead for real. So controversial was his death storyline that Vince had to categorically state that Benoit’s tragedy is “Real”. The irony is that this Raw show was billed to be McMahon’s memorial service. Wonder if he has ever heard the saying about tempting fate.

Even though we may hate McMahon’s tactics we feel that right now the more pressing matter is to remember the man who gave his whole life to wrestling and thereby tried to entertain us. Know as the crippler and the rabid wolverine he emerged from Stu Hart’s training as one of the most promising wrestlers ever and has lived up to that expectation ever since.

In his own words he has said earlier "Wrestling has consumed my life. Wrestling is my mistress. It's my passion. It defines who I am as a person." No other tribute could be greater to the man.

The Essenes = Part I

The Essenes

Jesus and Essenes image courtsey: essenespirit.com

The recent interest in this group, even though they existed a century or so before Christ, ignited, because of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 1940's. These scrolls were found in a place, where there was known to be a strong presence of this group, and the scrolls, the work of these ascetics. They had copied the Old testament in its purest form and these documents are considered some of the most authentic copies of the same. There was also some of their own works, interpretations of the scriptures etc. They were known to be teachers and healers.

Even though they were a sect that originated from Judaisim some of their practices and way of life indicate that they had some form of contact or intimate knowledge of Jainism, Buddisim or Hinduism. The writing of historians like Pliney and Josephus have thrown more light into their life styles. The exercises that they mention, the essenes practiced, could have been Yoga. They were vegetarians. Does the fact that Kashmiri pundits consider fish vegetarian, ring a bell?

Essenes image courtsey: harmonikireland.com

Many of Christ’s teachings sound very similar to their teachings and the silence that he maintains about them, while being very critical about the other sects, Pharasies and Scribes have led people to theorise that Christ was an Essenes. Among the Gospels, gospel according to John stands out as one that is focussing more on the Spirit than any other. This is the gospel that says for the first time in the Bible that God is spirit. Some people say that he was an essene and so was John the Baptist. John is described in the Bible as the "Beloved Desciple" and maybe it is so because Jesus and John belonged to the same essenes brotherhood? Only Jesus can aswer these questions, in the mean time we humble mortals can presume, to be dissecting the infinite source of wisdom to circumscribe within the limited scope of our brains.

Essenes hypopapy image courtsey: essenes.net

It is not essential that that Jesus was an Essene, because his life and teachings were different in some salient aspects from that of the Essenes described by the aforesaid historians. Even if he was, he must have taken some of the good aspects of the Essenes teaching and given his own touch to it and that must have caught fire.

The Essenes were members of an ascetic Jewish sect of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Most of them lived on the western shore of the Dead Sea. They are identified by many scholars with the Qumran community that wrote the documents popularly called the Dead Sea Scrolls. They numbered about 4,000 members. Admission required two to three years of preparation, and new candidates took an oath of piety, justice, and truthfulness.

Essenes image courtsey: thenazareneway.com

According to Philo of Alexandria and other writers of the 1st century AD,the Essenes shared their possessions, lived by agriculture and handicrafts, rejected slavery, and believed in the immortality of the soul. Their meals were solemn community affairs. The main group of Essenes opposed marriage. They had regular prayer and study sessions, especially on the Sabbath. Transgressors were excluded from the sect.

The similarity between a number of Essene and Christian concepts and practices (kingdom of God, baptism, sacred meals, the position of a central teacher, titles of officeholders, and community organization) has led some people to assume that there was a close kinship between the Essenes and the groups around John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. It is possible that after the dissolution of the Essene community some members followed John the Baptist or joined one of the early Christian communities, but any other direct connection seems unlikely.

Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower –The pride of Paris.

Eiffel Tower image courtsey: perso.orange.fr

The crowd puller.

Towering as the face of Paris beside River Seine this steel structure still remains as the magnet which attracts maximum number of visitors for years. The idea of such a tower with a so far unheard height of 324 meters (inclusive of the antennae with 24 meter) was born in the mind of Gustav de Eiffel the architect who designed it for the entrance arch for a world-fare (Exposition Universelle) to be held in Barcelona.

To see his baby born!

Gustav Eiffel image courtsey: ce.jhu.edu

Gustav Eiffel was a dejected man when his design was rejected by the committee and there were few buyers for his work on which he had poured out his heart. Most scoffed it off as ugly and lacking aesthetics! At last the corporation of Paris agreed to its construction on rigid terms ‘the structure is sanctioned only for a period of twenty years after it will be dismantled and the scrap metal will be the corporation’s property. Poor Eiffel had to agree as he was eager to see his baby born.

The vital stats.

Eiffel Tower at night image courtsey: 3dphoto.net

The work of this tower with 300.65 meters in height (excluding antennae) and a weight of 7300 tons started in 1887. Metal pieces were cast in special ‘puddle iron’ (special quality pure wrought iron) 300 workers were engaged in assembling 18038 of them. More than 2.5 million were the number of rivets to be fixed. Extra safety arrangements were to be provided to the workers as unlike a floored structure this tower offered no safety nets. Yet there were one casualty as one worker who died due to fall.

Educating Eiffel!

There were protests against this ‘towering inferno’ it was a real test of patience on the part of this acclaimed architect to be tried by laymen, they were teaching Eiffel about architecture! Somehow the tower could be completed in 31st March, 1889. Then it became the tallest structure in the world replacing Washington Monument to number two in height. Eiffel remained number one until 1930 when the Chrysler building of New York was built with a height of 319 meters.

An eye-sour so dear!

As per the conditions this structure had to be dismantled on 1909 as the twenty year agreement was due to expire, by that time the initial antipathy of the officials died down and the use of this tower as an efficient carrier of communication instruments was all in its favour. The glamour it added to the city also was a stumbling block to move against it. Those who blamed it as ‘eye-sour’ (the famous French writer Guy de Maupassaunt), later became daily visitor to the tower! (To queries about this change he answered that was the only place in Paris where the eye-sore is not visible!)

This tower that has celebrated its centenary in has met with many crises in this long period 1940 – 1944 was marked by German occupation they used this tower as their communication centre; mainly exchanging news about wounded soldiers etc. 1902 saw a massive lightening that struck this tower causing extensive damages, this has necessitated the replacements of about hundred meters length along with all costly electrical equipments.

Yet another tragedy!

There is one more ‘tragedy’ Eiffel Tower had to face when it was sold as scrap by one master con artist arranged a meeting of six scrap dealers in Hotel de Crillon and discussed a secret deal of auctioning the tower as it was a financial liability to the corporation! One dealer (Andre Poisson) actually fell in his trap he had to shell out the prize of the tower as well as extra bucks as kickbacks to the ‘official’. The official (Victor Lusting a Czechoslovakian) did the same trick on one more occasion

The present status.

Eiffel as a magnet for attracting tourists and thereby having a money-spinner status, all arrangements have been made to make conveniences for the tourists (of course making some money in that way). There is a 230 * 230 meters temp controlled scuba diving pool with facility arranged for beginners located near the north pillar of the tower. There are yet another attractions like underwater picture gallery for those who have the spirit to venture (this facility is denied for children and un-escorted minors).

Inside attractions.

Feroscope at the Eiffel Tower image courtsey: tour-eiffel.fr

The Eiffel Tower is open to visitors round the year from 9.30 AM till midnight, security check up is a bit tight (large baggage or animals not allowed inside) on the grounds of growing insurgency and terror threats. Visitors can either climb stairs or use elevators. First elevator allowed only up to 2nd floor (115 meter height), and visitors have to catch the next. The whole building is equipped with handicapped friendly arrangements. The first floor which is largest in area offers large collection of exhibits, there is good dining places as well as shopping facilities.

Second floor

Animated Window Scenes at the Eiffel Tower image courtsey: tour-eiffel.fr

The perfect floor to view Paris from here visitors can take elevator to the top or din in restaurants with exquisite food, go shopping on souvenirs and fancy item gift packing is available. Animated window scenes for visitors to understand the history of the structure the technologies utilized for its upkeep for the last century etc. visitors can simply scroll with a feeling that they are on the top of the world!

The top floor

Gustave Eiffel's Office image courtsey: tour-eiffel.fr

Can be reached by the help of escalator it has two floors; out-door and the indoor. The very escalator ride is enough to give the visitor the massive nature of the construction and reaching at the top the city of Paris can be viewed from here as if from an aircraft in 360 degrees. The engineer’s office is the masterpiece where Gustav Eiffel along with his daughter Claire and American inventor Thomas Edison sitting in life-size!

From a white elephant to a money spinner.

Illuminated Eiffel Tower image courtsey: world-city-photos.org

Visitors to this tower has exceeded two billion and still counting! The authorities walk all the way to the banks, no one dares to talk of scrapping it anymore, not just it makes money but it has been come to the status of a world monument and Parisians just love to have it as their own; and may not spare anyone who suggest of scrapping it! The sixty tons of paint required to coat it is no more a waste. Let Eiffel Tower rise to greater heights day by day!

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia or Aya Sofya

Hagia Sophia image courtsey: treakearth.com

Hagia Sophia or Aya Sofya

‘The most beautiful building ever made’.

A phoenix among structures!

In Istanbul Turkey there stands the most beautiful building the ‘Aya Sofya’ with many old names by which it was known and many old roles it had made to play in the centuries that passed after its construction. It in its course has been burned down to ashes, crumbled down in earth quakes and got vandalized by rioters but each time it literally rose from its ashes to be the most beautiful human construction ever happened.

Against all odds.

Hagia Sopia image courtsey: nato.int

Aya Sofya (Hagia Sophia – meaning Holy wisdom) was constructed in 360 AD by Emperor Constantius-2 (son of Constantine), it remained as the ‘Great Church’ (Megala Ekklassia) until 404 AD when it was burned down to ashes in riots when people took part in a tussle between the emperor Arcadius and the Arch Bishop John Chrisostom (who criticized the empress and was exiled for that). The fury of the mob did not even spare a trace of the original structure.

Nika Revolt.

Aya Sofya image courtsey: es.tldp.org

In 405 AD Thodosius -2 rebuilt it in far larger dimensions; this too has another tragic end as in the ‘Nika Revolt’ in AD 532 this building along with half the city of Istanbul was burnt down. (The Nika Revolt is believed to have originated with the dispute rose from a chariot race held in the city, comparable to the recent events of riots by foot-ball fans related with games!)

Justinian.

Justinian image courtsey: wikipedia.org

The next role of reconstruction was on the shoulders of Justinian who managed the whole work under his direct supervision, in this process Justinian brought eight Corinthian columns from Baalbek to Constantinople for the construction of Hagia Sophia. He entrusted Isidore a physicist from Miletus and Anthemeus a mathematician the design and planning. It is said looking at the completed structure Justinian exclaimed “Solomon! I have surpassed thee”.

The mega church.

Hagia Sofya image courtsey: webstylus.net

In its prime time being the largest cathedral in the world it enjoyed the service of 80 priests, 150 Deacons, 60 Sub-Deacons, 160 readers, 25 Cantors and 75 door-keepers!

The earth quake.

In 989 AD the devastating earth quake had its death-dance all through the region and Hagia Sophia was not spared as its beautiful dome crumbled down along with many other damages. The Byzantine government invited the famous Architect from Armenia ‘Trdat’ for the reconstruction of the church.

Adding value.

Centuries passed by and Istanbul come under the rule of Turkey in 1453, the Islamic rulers did not lag behind in protecting and improving Hagia Sophia (they converted in to a mosque), Mehmud 1 (who established a Koranic school, social kitchen and a library in the complex (known as ‘Kulliye’) , Sultan Abdulla Mecid (1847 -49 who did extensive modification works), Mustaffa Kemal Pasha (known as the Athathurk- father of Turky- who is well known for his reformist policies in that nation and who converted Hagia Sophia in to a Museum) all are prominent names associated with this history-rich “temple church mosque museum” who have added value in their tenure as rulers.

Sinan the architect.

Sinan image courtsey: wikipedia.org

Selim has played a major role (during his tenure the building was showing signs of weakness due to ageing) he engaged the great Turkish architect Sinan (who was the most famous architect who built the Ani and Agino churches) for the restoration and strengthening of the structure.

Sinan completed the work creditably and in addition he built two minarets by the sides of the main structure. The construction of these minarets is considered to dampen the seismic energy of the earth quakes thereby protecting the main structure. This theory has been approved by the modern seismologists and hence Sinan is considered as the first ‘engineer in the world who built building that can combat a quake with architectural changes.

Present status.

Hagia Sophia image courtsey: peraair.net

The modern day restoration works are done by the American Byzantine Institute under Thomas Whitemore as the restorers advance more and more Christian mosaics get uncovered and removal of the Islamic calligraphy remains a sensitive issue. Hence a balanced policy is being adopted giving presence of both style and texture to co-exist.

Formula 1: Prost v Senna Part II

Can Hamilton and Alonso recreate the magic?

Hamilton and Alonso Image Courtesy: nacionalnaklasa.com

As a kid I first started watching Formula 1 in 1988. That was the year when an up and coming driver called Ayrton Senna joined a more illustrious two time World Champion Alain Prost in the McLaren-Honda racing team. As they say, what happened from then on was history and magic. The rivalry between the two took Formula 1 to another level altogether.

For any sport to endure there has to be an inherent battle between equals. Intense rivalries among players and personalities become all the more alluring in any sport as it enhances the entertainment factor of the contest. We saw this happen during the Borg – McEnroe days or the Sampras-Agassi days in tennis. Every champion player need an equal to push his prowess to the limits and create matches which captures those everlasting moments of magic. Senna v Prost was one such rivalry.

Senna and Prost Image Courtesy: bbc.co.uk

The same magic has been missing from Formula 1 ever since Senna’s untimely demise and Prost’s retirement. Probably because Senna’s successor to the title of the greatest driver ever, Michael Schumacher, never really had a rivalry other than brief tussles with Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Häkkinen. But now Hamilton and Alonso has began to show sparks of recreating that magic. It would be a tall ask for them, but if they can achieve at least half of what Senna and Prost managed to dish out then this would be a season to remember.

Ayrton Senna Image Courtesy: brazilian-people.com

What should be noted though is the fact that in 1988 and 1989 McLaren was so dominant that they still managed to win the constructor’s championship even when their drivers were engaged in one of the fiercest and most bitter rivalries in the history of Formula 1. Their closest rivals were never even in contention to win anything unless both the McLarens retired from the race. It was the quality and rivalry between their drivers which made Formula 1 highly interesting during those days. Unlike the Ferrari domination in the early part of this millennium, it was always a two horse race in those days. McLaren’s policy of providing equal opportunity to both their drivers should be commended in this context.

Alain Prost Image Courtesy: sapere.it

This season too we have had an up and coming driver called Lewis Hamilton joining the McLaren-Mercedes team along with a more accomplished two time world champion Fernando Alonso. Everybody including Alonso never seriously took Hamilton as contender to his throne. It was widely expected by everyone that the 22-year old rookie would bide his time and learn the nuances of the sport and play second fiddle to his more illustrious teammate. Everyone other than Hamilton, that is!!!

Fernando Alonso Image Courtesy: aljazeera.net

The first sign that Hamilton does not consider himself to be rookie was seen during the Monaco Grand Prix this season. He did not hide his disappointment in being asked by the team boss (Ron Dennis) to ‘Cool It’ when he was in hot pursuit of the race leader Fernando Alonso. In his subsequent press conference he gave a not so subtle hint of his disappointment when he said that he considers himself to be the number-two driver in the team. By the end of the subsequent race at Canada however it was Alonso’s turn to be bitter (after coming in second to Hamilton) and say that Hamilton was being given preferential treatment by the team. However by winning the US grand prix last weekend Hamilton proved that he has the ability to perform consistently and mount a serious challenge to Alonso’s World Title. Not to forget that he is still in his first season and is racing in some of the circuits for the first time in his life. What he will have to prove though is his heart to overcome any adversity that will surely come in a long season like this.

Lewsi Hamilton Image Courtesy: estadao.com

With Ferrari trying to play catch-up, this season looks like it is going to go in favor of the McLarens which could only intensify the rivalry. Ron Dennis is already on damage control mode by playing down talks of the rivalry stating that the drivers like each other. But he forgets that even Senna and Prost liked each other too. They just wanted to win at all costs. We know Alonso certainly does not like to lose and judging by the attitude shown by the rookie neither does Hamilton. If they can maintain this intensity till the business end of the season, then Formula 1 fans better buckle up their seat belts; this could be a very exciting season indeed.

Lake Kawaguchi

Lake Kawaguchi. The most beautiful of the Fujisan’s five ponds.

Lake Kawaguchi and Mount Fuji image courtsey: 4cornersclub.com

Beyond glitter.

Japan as a nation is endowed with a lot of fortunes; of which the foremost is no doubt its disciplined and innovative people, who lead the world in the annals of latest technologies. The Japanese are equally famous for their artistic skill and the way they keep their home and surroundings appareled in a celestial set-up. The enchanting locations of this nation are not as touted as its modern day achievements outside the world, this in anyway does not diminish their charm.

Not just another mountain.

Kawaguchi image courtsey: flickr.com

The great Volcanic Mountain Fuji is not just another mountain for the Japanese, it is a sacred figure and the sight of this 3775 meters tall dormant volcano is a vision which is so soul-satisfying that they consider a visit to its base as a pilgrimage. Fuji is the tallest mountain in this nation its pyramid like look with its substantial white cap of ice on its top and the five beautiful lakes around is perhaps the most notable gift the Japanese have to offer before a tourist who happened to be there.

Kawaguchi and the four others.

Lake Kawaguchi image courtsey: allposters.com

Lake Kawaguchi, L. Yamanaka, L Sai (Saika), L. Shojika, and L. Motosuka all with crystal clear waters that its bottom can be seen when looked from the top. Lake Kawaguchi is the most exquisite and the easiest to access and hence the best developed among the five. These lakes along with the Fuji Mountain, Izu Peninsula, Izu Island, Numazu and 93.3 sq. kilometers are part of the Hakone Izu National Park; Protected and maintained by the Government of Japan.

As per the scientists these lakes were formed when the molten lava from Fuji flowed down and blocked path of a river- that existed at that time. The strange thing with them is that three lakes Saiko, Yamanaka and Motosuko are connected each other by subterranean waterways. All these three lakes keep same water level as a result.

Lake Kawaguchi and its shores has one more role to play, July and August are mountain climbing season and a lot enthusiasts visit this place for climbing on Fuji Mountain and these people assemble, organise and get trained on the shores of Kawaguchi. Before and after the climb these people get refreshed by the hospitable surroundings of this beautiful lake and all the pleasure locations like art galleries, museums (Kawaguchi Museum), entertainment parks (Dodanpa thrill ride with the world’s highest roller coaster ride), good hotels agreeing with all budgets etc.

At present Kawaguchi has emerged as the no 1 in popularity overtaking L. Yamanaka and started attracting greater number of tourists to it. Its hotels serve exclusive local cuisines (Hoto noodles is one of the most popular). There are many resorts here which offer luxurious baths in rooms specially designed to get a panoramic view of the Fujisan (for Japanese the suffix ‘san’ is a mark of respect – they consider the Fuji Mountain very sacred and address it Fujisan). Such a luxury of bathing as well as viewing Fuji doesn’t come cheap it costs about 100 yen extra (not a big deal for average Japanese).

Five Lakes of Fuji image courtsey: digi-promotion.com

Fuji Kawaguchika is a medium sized town in Minamitsuru district with a population of about 23’000 on the banks of Kawaguchi where the Fuji – Kyuko railway line terminates. From there are the ‘retro-bus available up to the lake in every two hours. For the convenience of the tourists there is a ropeway from the Kawaguchi Lake to Mount Tanjo which is also enhances the pleasures of the tourists as they get a bird’s eye-view of the town.

A visit to Kawaguchi is not a pleasure trip to the Japanese as far as Mount Fuji is there it is a sacred pilgrimage for every Japanese wish to perform year after year.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest – ‘The Fore-head of the Sky’

Mount Everest image courtsey: acrossthedivide.com

Like beads in a string.

The Himalayan Ranges which bear the tallest peeks in the world and stands as a robust rock-wall that stretches from Afghanistan to Assam. In the western edge it is the Hindu Kush, then towards east The Pamir Mountains, Karakoram and the Proper -Himalayas all like beautiful beads joined in a string to form the great Himalayan Ranges Mount Everest ‘the crown of the Himalaya is nearer to the eastern end. Being in the border between Nepal and Tibet (now part of China) both nations have reasons to boast as the host of the tallest Mountain.

Too many claimants.

Mount Everest image courtsey: presscluboftibet.org

Asians considered it as their god given wealth and accommodated it in their mythologies! Himalaya is considered to be the abode of Lord Siva (Kailasa) and hence Everest being the tallest mount there it is none other than Lord Siva for Hindus. Buddhists already treat it as their god. Government of Nepal to get it established that the peak is their own has came to a decision give it an exclusive Nepali name! After many deliberations the selected one name coined by one Baburam Acharya it was.....’Sagarmatha’ meaning Forehead of the sky (it was fortunate that they did not claim the moon their own and coined it some name).

Gold in dawn, silver in dusk.

A sun-rise at the Mount; a view from nearby hill (Rongbuk Monastery); the ice-clad peak that towers tall and sparkling in the purest golden rays of a fresh rising sun give a coat of gold to the peak that sprinkles it lavishly all around is a vision unparalleled; In the dusk; well adored in the milky moon on its forehead; reflecting its silvery beams all around the dark; it stands tall under the sky that looks as an open umbrella studded with a million stars is an unforgettable spectacle! Anybody who loves god so dearly would be compelled to call this ‘gold bathed peek’ god itself!

Hillary and Tensing.

Hillary and Tensing image courtsey: eb.com

Mount Everest had been there standing tall and challenging all adventurers all over the world, ever since Everest was acclaimed as the tallest peak in the world there had been no dearth for bold men attempting to conquer it. In this attempts of conquering Everest so many had lost their life but people still went on climbing, at last in May 29, 1953 a team of two, Sir Edmund Hillary a New Zealander adventurer and a Sherpa - Tensing Norgay was successful in conquering it. They were actually conquering the pages of history by this great ascend.

Youngest and the oldest.

Of late climbing on Everest has ceased to be a news as about there were more than 3050 ascends in 2006 itself, therefore records were born in different lines like climbing without oxygen, or through different route etc. Later they were followed by many other types of records like the youngest, oldest etc; let us see one or two such cases as a diversion. The youngest who ever climbed its peak is Shambu Tamang a 16 year old Nepali boy while the oldest was Roman Blanco of Spain who was sixty and a half years old.

Himalayan problem of pollution.

The climbing on Everest became a fad people began to flock to it as if in to a tourist spot this phenomenon created severe environmental problems in this high altitude areas which are difficult to be cleaned. As the mountain and the surroundings became polluted with the waste materials the climbers as well as their helpers have left, the government has imposed certain restrictions to climbers.

China and its ‘Everest road’

The recent decision of the Chinese government to build a 108 kilometer road up to the basic camp spending millions of dollars in this ecologically sensitive area also has drawn a lot of flaks from environmentalists. These projects include hotels and resorts intended for the tourism bonanza related with the ensuing 2008 Olympics. Chinese government does not seem to have liberated from the callous approaches of the formal Mao regime otherwise they would not have thought of flooding such an area with tourists and converting Sacred Himalaya in to a garbage bin. The question of a few dollars would have made them greed-struck!

Hefty fees!

Now the government of Nepal has started to charge a hefty fee ($ 25,000) from those who attempt to climb the mountain, yet there are many to do the job and pollute the mountain! Now Mount Everest stands as one of the most polluted Mountain in the world as the Fee collected from the climbers is not spent for the cleaning of the mountain; instead it is spent for meeting government’s own financial requirements.

Highest point on this planet!

Cimbers route Mount Everest image courtsey: alumnus.caltech.edu

There are many ways to calculate the height of a mountain. If the criteria is the height of the peak from sea-level (this is the most common practice) Everest is easily the highest as it is 8848 Meters above sea-level. When the criteria vary (difference from base to peak is taken as height; then Mount Mauna Kea of Hawaii comes first as it is 10200 Meters tall from its base but it only 4205 meters above sea-level. The reason being Mount Mauna Kea is located in the ocean-bed what a misfortune! It can be taken as a ‘locational dis-advantage’. In any case there is no dispute that this peak is the highest point on this planet.

Wow! Indian mathematics.

Mount Everest was named after George Everest the British Surveyor General of India who surveyed the peak first. At that time visiting those areas were forbidden for outsiders yet one Indian mathematician by name Radhanath Sikdar could calculate the height of the peak standing about 150 miles away in India as 29002 feet! Mount Everest has two main climbing routes the main path is through the Nepal route (Katmandu – Lukla – Namache bazar – Base camp is the most popular one. Due to political problems the Tibet route is generally not selected by the climbers.

Base camp.

The climb begins with a trek to base camp (5380 Meters) about two weeks has to be spend in the base-camp at Khumbu Glacier, there while debutants undergo training in various aspects of mountaineering; while they are getting acclimatized. In the mean time seniors with the help of Sherpas (a tribe living in the border between Nepal and Tibet they are famous for mountaineering skills) will be engaged in fixing ropes ladders etc for beginners to enhance progress of the beginners as well as to reduce casualties.

Camp -1 (ABC)

Then they proceed to Camp 1 or the ABC (Advanced Base Camp) in the early morning before the ice loosing its toughness. The ABC is about 6065meters high yaks will be provided to carry luggage like food, water and tents.

Climb via South East ridge, Camp 1 to 4 and then!.

Everest route image courtsey: -t-n.no

From Camp-1 climbers make way for camp 2 to the base of Lhotse (it is the 4th tallest in the world) at 6500 meters which is relatively flat, but gaping crevasses do not let direct pass and have to progress through extreme right. This place lacks the usual whistle of the blowing wind and hence called ‘valley of silence’.

The toughest parts.

Mount Everest climbers route image courtsey: 4to40.com

The journey from camp 2 to camp 3 (it is a small ledge at an altitude of 7470 meters) is tough and have to be done through ropes alone. From camp 3 to camp 4 the journey is a hurdle jumping exercise have to cross the yellow band (a wall of anvil-shaped sedimentary rocks (is another 500 meters altitude) the South Col (7920 meters) Climbers proceed from South Col at midnight towards 8400 meters balcony the South Summit.

Further journey is through a very dangerous and narrow path (Cornice Traverse) with a single misstep one can fall to gorges as deep as thousands of meters. At the end there is the Hillary Step a 12 meter high rock-wall at the height of 8760 meters to receive the climbers.

Top of the world.

Loose and rocky path is in waiting for the climber after the Hillary-Step; paving of fixed ropes is a relief but has to be careful of not getting entangled as he is already at the top of the world but has to return within less than half an hour because they have to reach camp before night. Saying goodbye! To the summit is difficult as there is no body residing not even an insect, as the only insect available was the jumping spider that too about 500 meters below. However Good bye dear Everest! See you later if God so desires!
